Academic Affairs
Academic Affairs (AA) focuses on supporting the academic side of the undergraduate experience at Duke. We work with professors, administrators, and resource & cultural centers to advocate for students’ needs inside and outside of the classroom. In the past, we’ve worked on projects such as establishing the Blue Devil Buddy program, which pairs first-year students with upperclassmen for mentorship, and launching GRUNCH, an initiative that gives students funding get lunch with a graduate student. Whether you’re studying in Durham or somewhere abroad, AA is the committee working to make sure you have everything that you need to thrive in your time at Duke.
Campus Life
The Campus Life Committee oversees the social development of Duke students and assists with university policies relating to the undergraduate experience. We handle athletic events, K-Ville, residential life initiatives, social programming, parking & transportation, and dining. social programming, campus arts initiatives, and residential life. Last year, we successfully passed the K-Ville Financial Aid Statute, improved access to online appointment booking, and reimagined equivalency options and the five dollar deal in dining halls. CL is a close-knit committee and we’re excited to meet you and get to work!
Durham & Community Affairs
Duke Student Government’s Durham and Community Affairs (DCA) committee has purview over community service, Durham city and county governments, North Carolina state affairs, relations with local universities, Durham cultural life, off-campus mediation, and engagement in elections. As a collaborator, DCA works on projects like Democracy Day to facilitate voter registration and enthusiasm on campus; fireside chats to engage Duke students and Durham residents with local politicians; and the Durham welcome box to ensure Duke students are productive and well-informed Durham residents. DCA is a transformative space where you can make a tangible impact on the Duke and Durham community.
Equity & Outreach
The Equity and Outreach (E&O) committee of DSG is geared towards supporting and enhancing the voices of marginalized and underrepresented students on campus. As a committee, we understand that we cannot represent all students on campus, but our labor is towards appropriately advancing the representation of all students on campus. Our mission is to ensure that all students, regardless of background, have access to resources and opportunities that promote their academic and personal success. Former projects include supporting (im)migrant students on campus and making laundry equitable. — Despite challenges like addressing systemic issues and resource limitations, the committee strives to make Duke a more inclusive place, focusing on expanding outreach, enhancing support systems, and driving policy changes for lasting, positive impact.
Services and Sustainability
Services and Sustainability (SAS) focuses on supporting the student experience by working on areas such as dining, transportation, wellness, libraries, and technology. We also collaborate with environmentally focused organizations at Duke and utilize the Climate Commitment to advocate for sustainable practices in all of Duke’s activities. In past years, SAS members have worked on reinstating reusable mug discounts, designing the FROSH101 House Course, collaborating with Duke Athletics to create sustainable game-day experiences, and creating an LGBTQ+ support group.
